Berkeley Beacon
Description
The very first printing of Emerson’s student newspaper, The Berkeley Beacon, was published in 1947. Pictured: The cover of volume 1, number 1, dated February 1, 1947 with the headline, “Emerson History Made.” Cover stories are titled: “No Strain Here”; “Star Visits College Advocates Knowledge” [referring to Janis Paige]; and “President Green Sends Letter to the Editor of the Berkeley Beacon.” President Boylston Green encouraged the creation of Emerson’s student paper, declaring it “the most valuable means possible of solidifying student opinion, of interpreting the varied facets of college life, and of establishing and fostering college spirit... Fearlessly, courageously and consistently it must point out the faults in any existing situation. And even more importantly it must make constructive suggestions.” President Green’s letter to the editor, seen in this image, addresses “Dear Mr. Mundt,” referring to Paul Mundt, the Emerson undergraduate student, who was first editor-in-chief of The Berkeley Beacon. Paul was an especially active student in the Emerson community with roles at WERS, Phi Alpha Tau fraternity, the college choir and as president of student government. He and his wife, Jean, met at Emerson College and were married for 59 years until their passing in 2010.
